Top 10 Things to Do in Arugam Bay

Uncovered: Things to Do in Arugam Bay

I remember my first time in Arugam Bay—I was taken aback by the beauty of this place. The breathtaking views, the salty air, the sound of the crashing waves—I got lost in it for a moment there. It had me thinking, how could I possibly have not gotten here sooner? But funnily, my first time in Arugam Bay was mostly based off on the pretty views and relaxing vibe—cause, little did I know then, that there were so many things to do in Arugam Bay. I went back again, twice, thrice, until I lost count. So, I thought, why not share with my fellow travel enthusiasts the ‘Arugam Bay things to do list’ that I have made, just so you too could fall in love with this beautiful beachside area like I have! Let’s dive in!

Surfing Through: Ride The Waves of Arugam Bay

‘Surfer’s paradise’—that’s what Arugam Bay has been nicknamed—and for good reason! Arugam Bay offers surfing experiences unmatched by other coastal areas in all of Sri Lanka. Why? The Main Point (the largest and most powerful wave in Arugam Bay) is one of the main reasons why surfers from all around the world fly down to Arugam Bay just to enjoy some world-class surfing activities. Needless to say, This is at the top of every list of Arugam Bay activities, and of course, probably at the very top of every list of top 10 things to do in Arugam Bay.

Off-roading on a Jeep Safari

If you love exploring nature and wildlife with the perfect blend of adventure, you cannot miss the adrenaline-pumping jeep safaris in Arugam Bay. One of the safari experiences would be the jeep safaris happening at the Kumana National Park. While on safari you would come across elephants, wild boars, leopards, and many different types of birds as well. The Kumana jeep safaris are loved by travelers who prefer the quiet, less-crowded vibe.

A Trip to the Yala National Park

Yala jeep safaris are more widely-recognized among both locals and tourists owing to its larger and better infrastructure. Another point where Yala gets the upper-hand is when it comes to leopard sightings. While the Kumana also has leopards, it is not the park’s main point of attraction as it is comparatively harder to spot them. In Yala however, there are more leopard sightings, drawing in international travelers to take a closer look at them, or click that perfect picture. This is one of those things to do in Arugam Bay that anyone would love to experience!

Watch the sunset views from Elephant Rock

Once you reach the top of the Elephant Rock which is a bit of an adventure in itself, you get a proper view of the coastline down below. As you stand there with the jungle behind you and the beautiful sea before you, the sky paints itself in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and purple, as the sun dips slowly, still a bright yellow. It’s quiet here, less crowded compared to beach spots, so you can enjoy the breathtaking view, and click the perfect pictures to your heart’s extent. This is one of my personal favorites from my very own list of top 10 things to do in Arugam Bay.

Trying out Sri Lankan Cuisine

Traditional Sri Lankan cuisine is known for being colorful, bold, and packing punchy flavors. The cuisine you find in Arugam Bay is no less! We’re talking hot, fiery curries, with flaky pol (coconut) roti, string hoppers hot out of the steamer with the classic dhal curry and pol sambol on the side. And, of course, the hearty rice and curry dishes that you just cannot turn down! Trust me when I tell you, even locals love these dishes as much as tourists do! You can try out this cuisine at beachfront restaurants, hotels, or even roadside stops to get the perfect homemade dishes and enjoy it in true islander style.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya & Whisky Point

More than being an Arugam Bay to do activity, this is more of a relaxing, and calming visit. With a history that goes about 2000 years back, this ancient Buddhist temple, ‘Muhudu Maha Viharaya’, is home to scattered ruins and various stone statues, telling you stories that you might love to know. Whether you’re into spirituality, history, or just happen to enjoy exploring, this is a gem you don’t want to miss. And, not too far away from the temple (around 10 minutes by tuk), is Whisky point, one of Arugam Bay’s best beaches to hangout. • Tip : As the temple is a sacred site, you may want to dress modestly

Epic Beach Parties

In the mood for some partying? No worries! The moonlit beach parties also happen to be one of the top things to do in Arugam Bay. Once the sunrises and sunsets fade into the sky begins the bonfires and the vibrant parties under the stars. The DJ blasts the music, and you might find people around you dancing barefoot in the sand, as you feel the cool breeze on your skin. There is a rotating schedule with these parties being hosted by different beach bars on different days—it is best to check up on upcoming beach parties around the time you would be visiting, especially if this is one of things to do in Arugam Bay that you would love to experience.

Last, but not least, on our list of things to do in Arugam Bay would be the farmlands and hidden beaches. Personally, I love exploring secluded beaches—they tend to be less-crowded, more quiet and peaceful, and often offering some of the prettiest views ever! Unspoiled, these spots give you the ultimate experience as you witness for yourself the raw beauty of Sri Lanka’s coastline. Not to forget, you can go explore the open farmlands, past the swaying palm trees, and rice paddies. There you have it, the real peaceful and relaxing island experience.
