Welcome to Sri Lanka’s surf capital, Arugam Bay! This small, beautiful coastal village nestled in the town of Pottuvil, is one of the best places to visit while you’re in Sri Lanka—and I have been dying to share its magic with you. From one travel enthusiast to another, I’ve put together this Arugam Bay travel guide just so you could experience the very best of this pretty beachside area—and hopefully fall in love with it just like I have!
Don’t get me wrong—the ocean views in Arugam Bay are like no other! We’re talking warm, shimmering waters with the prettiest switch of colors between a deep blue and a vibrant turquoise—the white foam with every break outlining the pretty waves. It wouldn’t be wrong if I told you that the sea at Arugam Bay is an absolute dream—a fairytale come to life. The water is inviting, hypnotic, and calls you back in the second you leave it.
But, Arugam Bay offers so much more than just the jaw-dropping views of the sea and that is what we will be talking about on this Arugam Bay travel guide.
As someone who has spent most of their life in this beautiful coastal village, I have personally explored and done enough research on this little paradise that I call ‘home’—and nothing beats the satisfaction of sharing this magic with someone else who would love every bit of it.
Arugam Bay is often referred to as a ‘surfer’s paradise’— and for very good reason! The ‘Main Point’, a long right-hand point break, offers surfers the chance to enjoy 200-500 meter rides in this beautiful waters. Typically throwing about 4 to 10 feet waves, this is the most powerful break in the east coast area, and probably all of Sri Lanka. This long half-moon beach is also home to plenty of beachfront bars and restaurants offering both traditional Sri Lankan food and Western food, magnificent sunset spots such as the Elephant Rock point, boat safaris, day tours, and even recreational activities. If you’re into the whole surfing scene, the best time to visit would be during the Arugam Bay season (May to September), when the waves are pumping, and the weather tends to be dry and sunny, offering the ideal conditions for a good surfing experience. During this time the Arugam Bay district gets livelier as surfers and travelers from all around the world show up—and that means, more beach parties, and bonfires. And, trust me—you’re gonna want to snap some beautiful pictures of this beautiful beachside area while it booms during the peak season. If you’re looking for a less-crowded, relaxing time in Arugam Bay just to enjoy the views, and the calmness, then you should probably consider visiting during the off-peak season (October to April).
One good thing about having an Arugam Bay travel guide is that you can note down everything important for your Arugam Bay travel plans. One of the most important things to consider is how you would be getting to Arugam Bay. And the answer is simple!
Depending on your budget—you can book a flight that you think suits your preferences best. Whether you’re getting to Arugam Bay straight from the Colombo Airport, or from other travel destinations within the country like Kandy or Mirissa, there are various shuttle services for you to choose from—this is more convenient and comfortable as you can just sit back and enjoy the views as the driver transports you safely. And, if you’re looking for something more budget friendly, you can take the train or even the buses, which also allows you to experience the Sri Lankan life on another level. The only issue however is that there are no train stations in Arugam Bay, and even the bus only takes you up to Pottuvil (the town) from where you would have to take a 5km tuk ride.
As a destination visited by travelers from across the globe, Arugam Bay doesn’t really lack in terms of accommodation. While Arugam bay 5 star hotels aren’t often spotted, there are other alternatives like hostels which happen to be more common in this coastal village—and travelers have ranked some of them as the best places to stay in Arugambay.

I remember the first time I caught a sunrise at Peanut Farm Beach. I was much younger, and thought it would be cool to find a good spot to catch the sunrise—so I set out on this mission for a while, and eventually came across Peanut Farm. It’s a view I will never fall out of love with!
